August Ends is a short story RPG Maker game with supernatural elements that centres around cooking. It takes place over the span of a week in late summer and follows the monotonous daily routine of a woman living alone in the woods, isolated save for her trips to an abandoned shrine deep among the trees.

August Ends is the first game I have ever made and was in development for seven months. Feedback is appreciated.

I hope you enjoy!

The game is only compatible with Windows. You may try running it on other OS using EasyRPG or Wine, but I cannot provide support as I have not used either software. The Vietnamese translation uses EasyRPG.

very sweet, adore the little details (the mounting messes, the plants...)

(+1)

also, curious what the lighter does?

(+1)

Thank you so much, I'm happy you enjoyed my game!

[vague spoilers below]

The lighter unlocks the little scene at the end where Cedie lights the candles on the desk, otherwise she would skip that and go straight to bed. The game is kind of unintuitive by design so there are a few details and scenes that players won't see unless they interact with certain items at certain times, etc. There's a specific one that I would be a bit surprised if somebody found it on their own.

aww, that's cute! I definitely was trying to light all the candles during the game, didn't realise it was only at the end.

....and I'm kinda curious what that really obscure one is, now. understand if you wanna keep it under wraps for discovery, though :P

Haha, sorry about that! I considered adding the typical "you can't do that right now" dialogue for some things but I'm just too big a fan of ambiguity.

Weeeeell... Cedie might have something to say about that coffee table when she gets back home on the last day...

I really liked the way this story portrayed grief in the way on how it's hard it's hard for a lot of people to in a sense move on from someone's passing. I think people need that one last talk with that person like how this game portrays it.

great game! the conversation between cedie and the god really stood out to me and i loved all the signs of her grief being shown in the repetitive routine. beautiful art too!

Found this game by pure accident, and while I think that normally I'd be bored by a game like this, I have to admit that I enjoyed it a lot. It might've been repetitive, with the continuous routine of waking up, making food, going to the shrine and sleeping (and optioally other things, like watering the plants or peeking through the keyhole), but somehow that only added to its charm and atmosphere. I really liked the ending, even if sometimes I couldn't understand  what's being said because I don't speak french haha. Frankly, even with my lack of knowledge, it was just as lovely.

Although I did kinda wish there was more than just one ending, maybe something tied to how good you can cook and/or how good you take care of your plants. But that's just a loose idea, I still tried to water the plants each day haha.

Lovely game and here's wishing that (if you decide to make any more) your next games will be just as good, and even better! Take care!

(I also made a commentary, but might be a bit cursed. Also the link end in the commentary has Mind and Sobs in it. Anyway enough useless facts)

This is a sad, depressing, and a heartbreaking game. The story is absolutely pretty good. The pixel arts/graphics, I adore (<-connoisseur/big fan of pixel arts, guaranteed always 10/10). Music is pretty good-amazing as well. Overall it's an amazing game, and I had enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster happening here. Thank you.

I really liked this. The ending shattered me ... T_T thank you for making this.

The art, story, and sound design were all amazing!

What a lovely game about grief. Beautiful art and animations and very kind story. Thank you!

I'm really touched that you think so, it means a lot to me. Thank you for playing!

(+1)

Of course! Looking forward to more games from you!

That ending was emotional 😭 Beautiful game! Turns out my cooking skills irl are the same in as game.

Thank you so much, that's kind of you to say! Sorry that the game couldn't be an escape for you haha.
